La Libertad is the working port town. Less styled for tourism than El Tunco, more of a real Salvadoran town with a market, a fish pier, and its own famous wave. Come for the pier break, the ceviche stands, and a coast experience with fewer other travelers in the frame.
The wave
Punta Roca, the wave off La Libertad. Long, powerful, and best on a bigger swell. Not a beginner spot.
Getting there
About 33 km from the airport, 30 to 55 minutes by car or shuttle in free-flowing traffic, longer at rush hour. The closest coast town to the airport, at the eastern end of this stretch past El Tunco and Playa San Blas.
Best for
Advanced surf at Punta Roca, local market life, day trips.
